Mid-Season Report 2012
We kicked the season off by beating Darnall 'A' 1-5 so we were in high spirits.
Next to be played was the Ecclesall 'B' match. Captain could only find five players so the morale was low. To our surprise Ecclesall were missing two of their top board players so we felt that we had chance of getting something out of the match. The match was all level at 2.5 - 2.5 with a game yet to be finished on board 5 where Pete Willoughby was paired with J.G.Morrison. Both players fought hard to win the match and eventually both players agreed a draw. The match result was 3-3.
Our next match was another away Match, which was three in a row. The Captain who dropped himself from playing, could only find five players to send to
S.A.S.C.A 'B'. Andy Mort kindly agreed to fill in. Playing away with a strong top order, the team felt that we would get at least a point out of the match. Apart from Andy and George, who won on boards one and two against strong
opponents, the real action was on board 4. where Kevin Fairburn out- graded
by 20 points against T.Willis won his game and we won the match 2-4.
On our very first home match, unfortunately for us the night was double booked with our 'A' team and we were missing Steve Bracey on the top board. We were out graded on every board against a promotion seeking Barnsley 'B' side. The last one to finish was George against T.Farrell who held our man all the way,
a draw was agreed and the match was lost. Alarm bells now started to ring with some of our club members as Dave Dunnett unexpectedly had lost three
games in a row.
S. Bracey was confident in sending the team to Phoenix 'B' without George. Apart from board 4. the team was out graded. Ian and Brian could only draw their games and the team lost by a point. Interesting was board 6. where Pete lost to P.Konark who has a provisional grading of 191. Dave Dunnett did himself proud by drawing his game on board 5. with Saeed Hassani whose play is improving.
Sheffield University came to us with undiscovered young chess players who were eager to test our weaknesses but there weren't any, the team won 6-0.
So we started the season on a high and we finished the first half of the season on a high.
Happy New Year everyone !

End Of season Report 2012
Congratulation to George Peters for winning the 'Captains Award' he won it by
one point from Brian Crofts.
Sheffield B team members:
Steve Bracey, G. Peters. I. Edmondson, B Crofts K Fairburn, and D. Dunnet
Unfortunately I did not finish this report at the end of the season , for which I apologise.
I am pleased to report that the team finished in the top order of the league and I believe
it is just matter of time before we gain promotion to a higher division.
The team has grown in stature and our existing players have improved. It is nice to see
some of our previous players making a come back : T.Amarnath, Mike Smith, David Ashcroft
and we have a new member in Chris Evans. We also have had the support of Trevor Webster, Pete Willoughby and Harry Schofield.
We wish to thank our captain Steve Bracey, who has put in a lot of time and effort and most
of all carried this team through tough difficult times. Well done Steve!
Brian Crofts will be taking on the role of Captain next season and I trust he will have the
support of all players. In the future, he will be responsible for updating this web page.
Best wishes for the coming season.
George Peters.

2011 Season Captain's Report
Congratulation to Brian Crofts on winning the Captain's Award, who scored 10 points out of 15 games.
At the start of the season Carlos decided to stop playing and Terry suddenly passed away, Ian
could only play occasionally and Steve and George were committed to playing for the 'A' Team. This left the team short of players. To get six players together at short notice, Steve (Captain) recruited Andy Mort and Alan Downham (from Belper). When these players were available we were a strong side and did not lose a match untill January 2011. Due to over crowded fixtures and lack of players we then had to default two matches to Ecclesall 'C' and Woodseats 'B'. This caused the team to drift into the relegation zone and from the last match of the season we needed one point from Barnsley 'B' to avoid relegation. Having got that point, we then won a total six matches, drew five and lost five. We hope that Pete will join us next season and give his full support to Chesterfield Chess Club.

Chesterfield 'B' -v- Barnsley 'B'
This was the last game of the season and we needed one more point to avoid relegation battles
within the league. Things were going well till George lost to young Francesca Fozard on board 2. Dave on
board 6. levelled the match by beating Mr L.Fozard. Subsequently draws were agreed all round. Steve
drew with R.F.Hallon on board one. Ian on board three drew his game with J.Stevens, Brian on board four with V.Shaposhnikov and Kevin with Paul-Lea-Kime on board 5.
Chesterfield 3-3
Well done everybody enjoy the summer break.

S.A.S.C.A 'B' -v- Chesterfield 'B'
S.A.S.C.A 'B' involved in the relegation battle produced a side far too strong for our regular players.
Andy and George playing away for the Chesterfield 'A' Team left the top order of the team weak, so it was
no surprise that we suffered the heaviest defeat of the season. Steve on board one, managed to draw his
game with J.Kirk. Kevin on board four, who was out played by T.Wills accepted the draw when offered.
Apart from board one, Chesterfield players where out graded and Ian, Brian, David, Trevor ended up losing
their games.
Match result: Chesterfield 1-5.

Chesterfield 'B' -v- Aughton 'B'
Steve held on to a draw against D.Watson on board one. George who was paired up with B.Williams who was out played in the end game and George collected the point.Ian who had a better position found himself in time trouble, he then ran out of time and lost his game to P.Connolly.This left the bottom three boards. Brian, Kevin, David, They all won their games. Well done lads! we are now top of the Leader Board.
Match result: Chesterfield 4.5-1.5.

Ecclesall 'C' -v- Chesterfield 'B'
Unfortunately, the Captain could not raise a full team, which probably cost us the match. Steve and George could only draw on the top two boards. Brian and Kevin were out played by P.Cooper and E.Carnie.This left Dave on board five as the only winner. He is on top of his game at the moment and enjoying some good results. Well done Dave.
Match result: Chesterfield 2-4.
Match result: Chesterfield 2-4.
Chesterfield 'B' -v- S.A.C.A 'B'
S.A.C.A fielded a strong side against us, this was understandable because they are at the bottom of the
league table. Gordon Stables made his annual visit to us and this time it was George who volunteered to be
the sacrificial lamb and he did lose his game, as expected, to this outstanding opponent.
Ian on board 2, gave us the kick start we needed, brilliantly beating M.E.Wright, the climax of the evening. Well done Ian! There was no let up from Brian on board three, skilfully beating S.Lee.Kevin and Dave on board four and five, were both out graded and consequently lost their games. Trevor to the rescue on board six. Imogen Stables, who is no pushover, found Trevor on top of his game and lost.

Aughton 'B' -v- Chesterfield 'B'
Adjourned match should have been played last October. The Captain fielded a strong side but was, himself, unable to attend.Andy and George were on board one and two. They found the top two boards competitive and both games were drawn. All the action was played out on the bottom four boards. Ian, Brian, Kevin and Dave all won against well established players who have been around a long time. This was a good result for the team, we are back in contention at the top of the League Table, because Worksop lost to Darnall.
Match result: Chesterfield 5-1.

Chesterfield 'B' -v- Darnall 'A'
There was a double booking on the night with the 'A' team, so Steve and Andy were missing.
George introduced new digital clocks to the players which they were not prepared for.
Ian on board 1, was paired up with Geoff Brown. In the middle game both players were fighting for the initiative, but the game was decided when Ian ran out of time with one move short at the time control and
lost his game.
Board two, George was paired up with C.Chatterton who won a pawn but he could not see George's
attacking tactical play and resigned.
Brian on board 3, playing against D.Chatterton, who lost his game to a mating attack which was well
executed by Brian. He is really enjoying a good run of results.
Kevin on board 4, playing with the new digital clock, reached the time control with a second to spare.
Whether he knew anything about it we don't know but he had a good laugh about it afterwards. With his
following move he checked R.Lindsay's King with the Queen, this led to him winning a piece and the game
was over. Another second on his clock, he would have run out of time and we would have lost the match.
Dave on board 5, with the black pieces found himself material down against D.Dawson. A carnage of exchanges followed and Dave lost his game.
Carlos on board six came back after a long lay off, he battled on with M.Turnbridge but he soon lost a piece and after a brave effort to equalise, he eventually resigned. We are hopeful that Carlos will find more
time to play chess again and it was nice to see him playing in the team for us.
As a result of drawing with Darnall, it would appear that we are no longer in contention with Worksop at the
top of the League Table.
Match Result: Chesterfield 'B' 3-3.

Chesterfield 'B' -v- Phoenix 'B'
Steve picked a successful side despite the absence of Andy and George. It was nice to have Ian and Kevin back into the team.
Board one. Steve could not overcome G.Fletcher's attacking play with white pieces and sadly had to resign
in his game.
Board two. Ian who put up a good fight eventually lost his game to J.Mercey who is a strong player and
very difficult to play against.
Board Three. Opposite castled Kings with both players going for the win. Who will mate first? Brian is about to be mated when he exposed H.Aryan's king and several moves later forced mate. Well done Brian !
Board four. After a long drawn out effort, Kevin lost his game to S.Moxon, who was a board two player
last season.
Board five. Dave could not get on the top side of P.Beckett and eventually he too lost his game.
Board six. Trevor won his game convincingly against R.Walton , who gave the team a respectable score line,
Well done! but sadly the match was lost. Worksop are now level with Chesterfield top of the league table.

Chesterfield 'B' -v- Ecclesall 'C'
A home match was played away at The Abbey (Woodseats). Steve was expecting a strong Ecclesall side so he introduced a new player, Alan Downham from Belper, into the team. Andy Mort agreed to play and the morale of the team was high.
Board One. Andy, was paired up with N.A.Wragg and eventually both players settled for a draw, On reflection this result was no surprise for Andy's opponent beat a 185 graded player this season.
Board two. Steve, trying hard to win the game, found himself in a lost position against P.J.Hoare who, incidentally, also beat George in the Sheffield 'A' team last season.
Board Three. Alan who was in serious time trouble in the endgame found P.Cooper too hot to handle and he resigned. A Half point from the top three boards, our Captain at this stage of the match was anxiously wondering whether the match was lost or not.
Board four. George, who was expected to win this game against E.Carnie found himself a Knight down for a pawn. In desperation he managed to save the game by giving forced checks on his opponent King and the game was drawn.
Board five. Brian, battled right down to the endgame with a few pawns and a Rook each, his King was better placed than J.R.Swindell's King and he forced his King through to claim the points. well played, Brian !
Board six. Dave, with pawns down mated M.Howerth's black King . Dave won his game and as a result, the match was saved. Well done indeed, Dave !

Barnsley 'B' -v- Chesterfield 'B'
Steve needed to find a replacement for Terry Hand, and Andy Mort agreed to play for the team and for once we fielded a side which was a lot stronger than usual. Barnsley players were out graded on the top three boards and this was reflected in the games results - 3-0 to Chesterfield. Brian who was on board four finished early and gave us the half point we needed to win the match. Dave on board five hung on till the match was secure and agreed a draw with his opponent. This left Trevor on board six, who has not lost a game this season, but he drifted into a lost 'chess ending' and he was forced to resign.
Match result: Chesterfield 4-2.
Match result: Chesterfield 4-2.
Chesterfield 'B' -v- Worksop 'B'
M.Clark who is captain of the Worksop 'B' team, currently on top of the league, came to us seeking revenge with C.Chambers on board one, and P.Griffths on board two.
Steve on board one, With opposite castled Kings C.Chambers failed to pressurise White King and drifted
into a lost position, with his own King in serious trouble he resigned.
George on board two, Playing with the Black Pieces after castling on the King side found his King and Queen trapped by a rampant pawn on the h8 and h7 square. As the game went on George managed to free his
Queen and destroyed P.Griffiths central pawn formation to win by an extra pawn in the end game.
Kevin on board three, Could not contain M.Clark's game play and eventually in the 'end game' he
resigned.
Brian on board four, He put up a good fight against A.Fidler unfortunately he too lost his game in the end.
Dave on board five, Bounced back against A.Smith giving the team the vital point that was needed
to win the match.
Trevor on board six, Displayed good sound chess against A.Story and he earned a vital point for the team.
Perhaps this could be Trevor's season for getting good results.
Worksop, despite having lost two matches to Chesterfield, are still top of the League Table.

Darnall 'A' -v- Chesterfield 'B'
Captain struggled to find six players for this match, eventually Ian Edmundson filled in for Terry Hand and
we were pleased to find that we had the strength and depth to match the Darnell 'A' team players.
Steve on board 1, This game was the highlight of the evening. Both players are on top of their game and
going by previous encounters this game lived up to it's expectation. In the Sicilian: Canal - Sokolsky opening, Steve gained the upper hand in the middle game where he won a Rook for a Bishop and then his King forced his way through G.Brown's weakened King side. After capturing two pawns, his King could not escape from perpetual checks. Draw was agreed, game over.
George on board two, In the French: Tarrasch opening George missed a chance to win the game and
drifted into a position where the game would have lead to a draw. K.Booth who was in time pressure made several failed attempts to offer a draw, he then blundered and lost the game.
Ian on board three, A hard fought game which went right down to the end game where he was a Bishop down
for two pawns. He almost equalised against C.Chatterton, when he missed out on a single pawn race and the
game was lost.
Kevin on board four, Another tough game. Kevin came out on top in the end against J.Clarke and he gave us
the vital point we needed to draw this match.
Brian on board five, With the black Pieces, managed to draw the game with D.Chatterson. Brian is gaining
experience and improving with every game.
Dave on board six, He gave his all in his game against M.Turnidge unfortunately he missed out on a win
and lost his game.
Match result: Chesterfield 3 - 3.(G.P)

Worksop 'B' -v- Chesterfield 'B'
We went to Worksop to find that the Worksop 'A' Team and the 'B' Team were scheduled to play on the
same night and M.Clark the Worksop 'B' team Captain struggled to select a strong side against us. It is not
often we get a break during a season but we welcomed this one.
Steve on board one, Who was Paired up with M.Clark, edged ahead in the middle game and forced his opponent to blunder and consequently won the game.
George on board two, In the middle game playing against the 'Stonewall opening' he reached a favourable position but he was not convinced of the outcome of the game so he was left pondering whether to attack
or not and at this point A.Fiddler's mobile phone went off. George thought it was a good time to offer a draw, and they shook hands.
Kevin on board three, Hard fought game went down to the 'end game' where R.Porter gained the upper hand and collected the point.
Brian on Board four, Playing with the 'King Indian reversed' demolished S.Porter's defence he and gained a
vital point for the team.
Dave on board five, Paired up with T.England who has been around playing chess for a very long time. Unfortunately he won his game against Dave and levelled the match.
Trevor on board six, Turned out for us to replace Terry Hand who sadly unexpectedly passed away on the 13th of October. A sad loss to our club and team, he shall be sorely missed. Trevor who was paired up with F.Holt gained a vital point for the team which won us the match.
Match result: Chesterfield 3.5 - 2.5.(G.P)

Phoenix 'B' -v- Chesterfield 'B' 2010/11
After an anxious season where we just escaped being relegated from the third division to the fourth division by
the skin of our teeth, the team got off to a flying start. From previous encounters the only change was that
C.Walker for Phoenix and G.Peters for Chesterfield were absent. On prediction, Chesterfield players were
out graded on almost every board and the match result should have gone to Phoenix but it didn't.
Steve on board 1, Gained vital point against G.Fletcher, showing his true form.
Kevin on board 2, Playing on a higher board gave J. Mercy a hard match and Kevin was unlucky not to
win, both players settling for a draw. One of the best results for Kevin against a worthy opponent.
Brian on board 3, A fine win against H.Aryan, another shock result for Phoenix players. Brian showed us
that he can play on higher boards well as on lower boards in the team.
Terry on board 4, Managed to get a draw against S.Moxon. who in the past was a board two player. Terry
let us know that we have not seen the best of him yet.
Dave on Board 5, He was paired up with S.Hassini and he clinched the vital point that the team needed to win
the match. A fine performance which lifted the morale of the team for the coming season.
Trevor on Board 6, Who has not failed to deliver settled for a draw against P.Beckett. Nice to have him back
playing in the team.
