CHESTERFIELD CHESS CLUB
CHAMPIONSHIP
2017
We congratulate Daniel Sullivan for winning the 2017 Chesterfield Chess Club Championship Tournament.
At the halfway point (end of June) Steve Burke and Michael Johnson both led with 1 win each and drawn games. No one had achieved more than 50%.
Then, Daniel successively defeated former champions Steve Housley, Mike
Alcock and Michael Johnson.
Whit one game to play and with only a draw needed, Daniel also defeated
Amar.
An emphatic performance from our new Club Champion ending up with
5 out of 6 points: 4 wins and 2 draws.
Steve Burke was a credible second with 4 points 2 wins and 4 draws a score
that would have been sufficient to win in the earlier years.
R J Hooton Trophy
The very first game was truly amazing, the present first team top players
did not know what was happening between Alan Hobson and Tim Humphries
eventually the game led to a drawn game.
Following week Alan lost to James.
Tim then set off on a winning roll, beating John Riley and James in successive weeks, and a few weeks later beating Mike Fanshawe to complete a comprehensive victory with 3.5 points out of 4.

2016
Mike Alcock is our 2016 Chess Champion.
Congratulations to Mike Alcock, Club Champion once again.
Mike Alcock is outright Club Champion with 4/6, with 3 players close behind on 3 ½ [Ken Morrison, Michael Johnson & Steve Burke]; also closely followed by Steve Bracey and Steve Housley. Out of 21 games, 8 were decisive, 13 drawn. A former Champion Steve Housley may have set a new record by drawing all six of his games.
This timidity was in stark contrast to the R J Hooton Trophy which saw Amar rapidly win with a score of 5/6 +4 =2.
Congratulations to Amar winner of the R J Hooton trophy 2016 and with it the right to play in the Club Championship next year. Next year's club championship contenders watch out.
2015
Mike Alcock is our 2015 Chess Champion
Congratulation to Mike who won the tournament with a round to
spare. In a competitive all-play-all tournament, our new entrant
Steve Burke came second.
Congratulations to the winner of the Hooton trophy, Brian Crofts.
We wish to thank Mike Smith for volunteering to run the tournament during the summer and we hope he will continue to do so in the
future.
2013
Steve Housley is the 2013 Chesterfield Chess Club Champion.
He beat Steve Bracey in the final. Congratulations to Steve Housley,
and also to Steve Bracey for winning all his games that he played in
his group, a very competitive group.
Many thanks to all the players, especially those who completed all of their games. Dave Dunnett and Ian Edmundson drew their play-off
game so agreed to share the Hooton Trophy
As agreed at the A.G.M. the club championship this season will be run as an all-play all tournament. If as expected, thre are more than seven entries the tournament will be split in two groups of approximately equal strength. This will be by a seeded draw at the chess club. The top players in each group will play-off for the Club Championship. The top player of each group who are under 140, grade will ( unless the winner of the group) will play off for the Hooton Trophy. Entry is open to all members of the chess club.
Draw will be made at the Three Merry Lads on the 5th of November 2012. Late entries will be considered up to the end of 2012. Late entries may be refused if it is considered it will cause the groups to be too uneven in strenght. Entry is to be made in person, by telephone or e-mail to Pete Willoughby (01246 769511 or [email protected]) or Mike Johnson (075437147845 or [email protected]) by the 4th of November 2012.
Play is to take place in the group stages until end of July 2013.
Scoring is to be 3 points for a win, two points for adraw and 1 point for a loss. Unplayed games will be assigned a score as decided by the tournament organisers (Pete Willoughby and Mike Johnson). In order to avoid a 0-0 assignment in such cases the players will be required to have informed the organisers of difficulties in playing the game ( an example might be if one player has offered the other player three or four reasenable dates for the game, all of wich have been declined) Rules for the play-offs are available if required.
Derby and District League time controls are recommended (30 moves in 75 minutes, 15 minutes allegro) but Sheffield time controls can be used if preferred. Games will be submitted for Yorkshire grading.
Games can be played at any mutually agreed venue., but special arrangement have been made at the Nags Head on 37 Newbold road each Tuesday evening from 7.30pm. Members are requested to use this accommodation whenever possible in order to secure a reserve venue for the club.
All results shall be reported to Pete willoughby (tournament organiser).
The draw and results will be reported for inclusion on the web site.
2012
David Latham is our 2012 Chess Club Champion
Report:
A disappointing entry this season with only eight entrants.
The first round went to form with higher graded players winning each game.
Second round was the round of the 'shocks' when on top board George Peters missed a win against David Latham and duly settled for a draw. Similar good draws for Trevor Webster and Ian Edmundson, and Pete Willoughby against Brian Crofts.
The third round again went to form, and unfortunately Pete Willoughby retired due to an impending operation.
In the Fourth round Ian Edmundson managed to beat George Peters, the other games going to form.
Fifth round with only seven players in the championship the last round was a bit of an anti-climax with huge grading differences in all the games. The higher graded players duly won leaving Dave Latham as club champion for the sixth time, but with the new name on the Hooton trophy (Ian Edmundson),
All though most of the games were enjoyed by the participant, the championship suffered from the shear volume of games required to be played by the top players throughout the season, each round longer than was desirable. The championship didn't have the edge that is usually has partly due to the fact that Mike Alcock's absence left Dave Latham being in control virtually the whole way through (with a slight slip against George Peters). Steve Bracey being absent left all of the players being a little comfortable than normal, and Pete Willoughby withdrawing left uneven pairings, forcing some byes. The good news is that Mike Alcock and Pete illoughby have already entered the club championship for the next season, and with the impending return of Steve Bracey, and the intention of Chris Evans and Dave Ashcroft to join the fray, an exhilarating championship in prospect.
Next season (2013) all play all format will be tried, with probably two equally graded groups.
