End of season Report 2017/18
Although we were in second place all season, we ended up only marginally above some of the teams bellow us. we were the only team to beat the runaway winners, Breadsall, though they fielded a much weakened team in the final match. We would have been much closer had we not defaulted boards in two games against weaker opposition towards the end of the season. Generally, we had a very reliable squad which performed consistently, but having two teams in the same division is not without its difficulties.

End Of Season Report 2017
Captain's report
Despite 'blowing' the Championship in the final game, the team had a very successful season, based on the stability of only having to use 5 players during the campaign. All season we oscillated with Breadsall in first or second place, but only achieved a draw against our rivals in the final match when they were missing their top two boards. Peter and Andy unbeaten, though the later drew too many games.

End Of Season Report 2013
Derbyshire League Champions
The 'B' team was originally set up four years ago to enable more players to have the opportunity to participate in the Derbyshire League competition matches.
The team started its life in the Third Division in the Derbyshire League and gained promotion to the Second Division. At the end of the 2011, the team was then promoted to the First Division.
In their second season in the First Division they became the 2013 league champions, against stiff opposition.
To have achieved promotion from the Third division to the First division and become league champion in that time was no mean feat. All the players who has taken part in any matches during that time is to be congratulated.
I would like to add not only my personal congratulations, but also my sincere thanks and appreciation, to everybody concerned for giving their skill time and effort, all of which have contributed to the teams success.
Well done and thank you, every one.

Mid-Season Report 2013
Again as last season we have kicked the season off paired up with our 'A' Team.
Board one, Mike held Dave to a draw, this is a good result for us.
Board two, Martin who usually plays well against Mike, draw was agreed.
Board three, Andy again held Steve to a draw.
Board four, George paired up with Mike Smith was the last game to be finished and there were anxious moments for both teams. The initiative swung from one player to the other till neither player could make any progress, and well into the end game a draw was agreed.
Away match at Breadsall. The Captain struggled to get a team together for this
match, Andy was not available and there was no reserve player to be found. He
asked Andrew Hards to fill in for us..
Board one, this was the last game to be finished and the match result was in the balance, when offered Mike refused the draw and went all out for a king hunt,
Paul Madden tried his hardest to fend off the attack and eventually got caught in a
pin. This was a classic game and as a spectator it was a joy to watch.
Board two, Martin was paired with Steven Burke, pawns were interlocked right across the board and nothing could move. Steve offered a draw then out of the blue came a rook sacrifice from Martin which led to Steve losing material and he resigned.
Board three, Andrew Hards held Derek Jarvis to a vital draw which contributed to
us winning the match.
Board four, George was totally outplayed in the middle game by Andrew Toothill
George resigned
So far This was our best result of the season, a match which the captain did not expect to win.
Away match at Derby/Mick' 'A'.
Board one, Martin was paired against Raymond Evans, and this was the last
game to be finished. He almost reached the end game when an attack, which
failed on Raymond's defence, left him helpless with a loss of an open file and a dangerous pass pawn on the A file which was defended by a bishop. Martin
was forced to resign and the match was lost.
Board two, outgraded by 20 points and paired against John Shannon, Andy produced one of best draws of season. Well done!
Board three, George shown some determination to win, but he was held to a
draw by David Williams.
Board four, we wish to welcome David Ashcroft to the team. He is making a comeback after a long absence from the chess world. He played his first match
paired against Jamie Castro, the game ended as a draw. A good start to a
season.
Home match with Belper 'B'.
Board one, Mike, playing against Alan Downham, won an exchange with Rook
and Knight versus two bishops when both Queens were off the board. The
game ended when Alan had to give up one of his bishops for a dangerous
passed pawn. With a bishop down he resigned.
Board two, Martin bounced back from his last match with a fine win against
Luke Alldread. His result helped to clinch the match for us.
Board three, Andy got a useful draw playing against Vaughan Smith.
Board four, David achieved another draw against John Shaw who
stated after the match, that David was a worthy opponent. Well done to Dave.
The team has lost only once so far this season and we are still in the running
to finish in the top order at the end of the season.
Happy New Year.

Mid-Season Report 2012
This is our third season in the Derbyshire League. We have been promoted twice and we are here to stay
in the 'A' Division. We are in debt to some of our club members who have made it possible for us to be here and who are no longer playing in the 'B' Team. At the 2010 A.G.M., the club voted that we should enter the
'C' Team (who have also tasted promotion), so that none of our club members are left out of playing in the Derbyshire league.
At the 2011 A.G.M. the club voted that both 'A' and 'B' Derbyshire Division League captains will name their registered players and the rest of the club members who wish to play in the Derbyshire League 'A' Division
will be split down the middle. With the limited talent that is available in the club, it is an opportunity for the club to grow and have our existing members' games raised to a higher level. The reality of the situation demands that both captains will have
to take drastic measures and look elsewhere for additional players so as to avoid relegation.
The Fixture list demanded that the season kicked off with Chesterfield 'B' v Chesterfield 'A' playing
against each other. Both captains fielded their registered players so as to test each others strengths. Mike Alcock drew with Dave Latham on board one. Shock result
of the match was Martin Howard beating Mike Johnson. Andy Mort drew with Steve Bracey and George Peters beat Brian Crofts on board four. The result shows that with further adjustments to the 'A' Team, the result next time around will not be one sided.
Next we were faced with Breadsall 'A' (title contenders). We created a scare on the top two boards Mike Alcock won his game against M.Molyneux, Andy, drew his game against G.Halfpenny, but on the bottom boards we were outclassed. Mike Smith lost to D.Jarvis and George lost to A.Toothhill. Had we had a bit
more experience in the 'A' Division we might have done better.
We went to Spondon to meet Burton 'B' they arrived with a player short hoping
to win on board one and
board three with the White pieces. Unfortunately for them Mike Alcock won on board one against R.Hedges
and Andy won on board three against D.Hoddy. Martin drew with J.Hoddy. Our second win of the season.
Lichfield 'A' turned up with M.Staples who won against Mike Alcock on board
one, George managed to win
on board four against A.Kent to level the match but Martin lost to P.Collins and Andy drew with M.Maher.
The team went down by a half point again.
We went to Belper 'A' a strong experienced side which has played in the 'A' Division for many years, we
just wanted a result to come our way. Match was going well, top three boards ended in a draw. Board one S.Edwards v M.Alcock board two S.Gimore v M.Howard board three M.Alderson v A.Mort. Last to finish was D.Gothard who crushed George with the white pieces on the bottom board. Again we lost the match by half
a point.
At last a home match at Nags head this time. It was Derby/Mick 'A' who where scheduled to turn up, they arrived unexpectedly with J.Shannon we matched him with Hubert who held him to a draw with a classic game. Martin outclassed R.Forey with a clever ending, Andy settled for a draw with D.Williams. George had a fine win with the white pieces against M.Cobham. He finally earned his place in the team. This was our best win of the season and we have achieved our goal. We managed to gain fifty percent from six games.
Well done everybody.
Happy New Year!

End of season report 2012
The team missed Mike Alcock, and so the captain had no choice but to recruit. He found Chris Chambers
from Worksop but unfortunately on the night of the event he was unwell. He recommended Jim Burnett to
to take his place and all went well until we learned that Jim had already played for the Chesterfield 'A' team
in the same league. Burton 'A' team at full strength with Phil Briggs on board one who held Jim Burnett to
a draw. Martin with a stunning game beat Trevor Mould. Andy drew his game with Allen Ralph. Finally
George beat Paul Moore on board four. Later we were disqualified on board 1, as we had breached rule 12.
We still had enough points to win the match, Chesterfield 'B' 2.5 v 1.5.
Our return match with our Chesterfield 'A' Team, again missing Mike Alcock, we had the pleasure Hubert
Mossong playing on board 1. Dave Latham was ready for him and outplayed our man in the middle game. Martin Howard achieved a double win over Mike Johnson in this tournament, and the match was all square.
Andy Mort settled for an early draw with Steve Bracey. It was all down to board 4. The game was going
well till both players found them selves in time trouble. Both flags dropped. The question now was who's flag had dropped first? While the inquest was going on George Peters asked his opponent Ian Edmundson if he would settle for a draw. Not realising that the match result depended on it he kindly agreed. David Latham
and several club members objected and demanded that George should resign his game. He consulted his own players and admitted that he had actually seen Ian's flag drop so his own flag must have dropped first. The decision taken, which was the correct one, was that George would resign his game and so the Chesterfield
'B' team lost the match.
Chesterfield 'A' 2.5 v 1.5
Still missing Mike Alcock we have learnt that he is recovering and doing well after having an operation. We wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to welcoming him back to the team.. We could not find anybody who could play on board 1, so Martin was playing on the top board against Paul Madden who represented Breadsall 'A' team. Paul found a chink in Martin's armour and left him with a Queen side double pawn and
he lost the game. Andy on board 2, found John Molyneux too hot to handle so we were 2 points down. For Board 3, we asked John Denby to come out of retirement to play for us. John obliged just this once. He held Steve Burke to a draw with the White pieces, he showed us he can still play chess. George took on Derek Jarvis on board 4, and late in the middle game George asked Derek for a draw and it was accepted.
Chesterfield 'B' 1 v 3 Breadsall 'A'
After a long absence Mike Alcock agreed to play for us. He carried on where he left off with a convincing win over R.Hedges on board 1. John Hoddy captain of Burton 'B' side playing on board 2, facing Martin at his
best lost to a classic finish. As bystanders, we observed Martin's skilful attack on John's king with two Knights, Rooks and Queen. Dave Hoddy put up some strong resistance against Andy and late in the middle game a draw was agreed. At this stage, the match was won. George playing on board 4, against David Pickering was a pawn up in the end game. With a rook each and several pawns on the board he was one move away from winning when he blundered and lost his game. Should have gone to specsavers !
Chesterfield 'B' 2.5 v 1.5
Approaching the end of the season relegation battles are on the horizon. The George excluded himself realising the importance of this match. He had the luxury of Hubert Mossong playing Ray Foray from Derby/Mick 'A' on board 1, Ray had the advantage with a lone Queen against two Rooks several pawns on the board till Hubert showed his end game skills. A draw was offered and accepted. Mike Alcock was on board 2, against David Williams and this game was played to the book, Derek threw everything at Mike with some clever defensive moves but Mike never flinched. the result was a drawn endgame. Martin first time playing on board 3, against Mark Polovina and in the middle game he outplayed his opponent on the king side with a crushing mating attack which won us the match. Andy found himself on board 4. playing Kevin Dalley who just hung on to draw his game. A crucial win for the team thus avoiding relegation. Well done to you all.
Chesterfield 2.5 v 1.5
A home match at Nag's head against Belper 'A', Unfortunately the captain could only find two players
himself and Martin Howard , due to holidays. To save Belper players making the journey, the captain forfeited the match. Chesterfield 'B' 0 v 4.
Again the captain dropped himself from this game which was another must win situation, and recruited Andrew Hards with a grading of 173 from Sheffield Nomads chess club. New face, new talent playing on board 3, against John Keaveney from Lichfield 'A' chess club. Andrew sacrificed a pawn early in the game to get some kind of mating attacks going on John's King. It was a endless stand off between both players till eventually a clever Knight move from Andrew forced his opponents king offside which led to loss of material and he resigned. Mike Alcock back in his rightful place on board 1, held Murice Saples to a draw. This was a crucial half point for us to win the match. Martin home again on board 2, paired up with Peter Collins fought a duel which ended up to be adraw. Andy on board 4. playing Brian Homewood A draw was agreed and we won the match.
Chesterfield 'B' 2.5 v 1.5
Last game of the season with no importance we secured 4th place in the league and we could not better our
position, this led to Mike Alcock abstaining and allowed the George into the team. Martin found himself on
board 1, against Phill Briggs from Burton 'A' chess club. Late in the game with lots of pieces on Phill found a breakthrough Martins defence but fell foul to a perpetual checks from Martin's Queen, draw was achieved.
Andrew Hards we pushed him to play on board 2, against Trevor Bould he tried his best to get a result but
Trevor come through and won the game and the Match. Andy Mort paired up with Ralph Allen the game
went on reached a drawn position which was agreed .George back in the team playing his old rival
Paul Moore won a pawn in the opening but he could not hold his position and with some sharp play from Paul he was held to a draw.
Chesterfield 'B' 1.5 v 2.5
This was our first season in the league and we finished fourth. The Captain had a very strong learning curve and wishes to congratulate all those involved in the matches for their time and effort. To finish mid-table in our first season in this league is a good beginning. May we go from strength to strength. Well done everyone.
Next season we will have to do it all over again unless our A.G.M. or the changes to the British chess federation might not allow us to have two teams in the Derby District League Division 1. Captain wishes to thank all the players who have contributed.

Belper 'B' -v- Chesterfield 'B'
We faced a strong Belper side who needed one point to avoid relegation. The Captain recruited Ken Norbury into the side and he was paired up with C.Cantrill on board one . The game reached a point where both players accepted a draw.
J.Shore on board 2 won a pawn against George and then lost it in the end game. George stuck it out and
won his end game.
Ian on board three played against L.Alldred and they became bogged down, both players being stuck for a move, so a draw was agreed.
This left Brian on board four, paired up with V.Smith who out played our stalwart and the match was level.
This is a good result for us, well done everybody. Enjoy your summer break !
Match Result: Chesterfield 2 - 2.
Congratulate for our Chesterfield 'A' First Team for winning the Derbyshire First Division for
the third time in three years we shall be joining them next season.

Chesterfield 'B' -v- Long Eaton 'A'
Long Eaton team turned up with a player short, so they gave us a chance to get something out of the match. Unfortunately for us they had R.Evans on board one. As expected he won his game against Martin
and the match was level. Andy on board two was paired up with A.Robins and both players settled for a
draw. This left Steve Housley who was paired up with N.Davies both players going for the win. Well into the
middle game in a double edge game with opposite coloured bishops, Steve sacrificed two pawns to open up
the king side to trap N. Robins castled king. Unfortunately for him he left his own King unprotected and got mated instead.
We wish to congratulate Long Eaton for winning the Division Two Title. We shall join them in division one next season as runners up. Well done to all our players for an excellent performance during this season.

his exposed King stopped him from winning but he secured a draw.
Steve on board one, drifted in to a lost position and resigned in the end game. He was paired with
R.Evans graded 192, they don't come any higher than this in this league.
We almost got the point we came for. Well done everyone !

A Valley/C Cross 'A' -v- Chesterfield 'B'
Steve Bracey on board 1, showed a lot of respect to Dr A Natt. He chose to play a solid opening with
the White pieces, as the game drifted towards the endgame both players agreed a draw.
Martin board 2, played a hard fought game. The players reached a stage where they each had a Queen, Rook and four pawns. Dean offered a draw after a long pause Martin agreed.
Andy on board three, Young A.Webster played some clever defensive moves eventually breaking through with
his rook to catch Andy off guard and claimed the point. Match all square.
George on board four, paired up with P.Brooks. In the middle game George sacrificed his rook for a knight
to break down P.Brooks centre pawn formation and exposed his opponent king to mating attacks. After a
long struggle P.Brooks got caught in a double pin on his king and queen and he then resigned.
A good result for us.
Match result: Chesterfield 2- Clay Cross 2
As a matter of interest, Long Eaton and Derby-Mick drew their match which means that we are still 2 points clear at the top of the table

Steve Bracey on board 1, Playing M,Cobham. After a long battle equally matched in strength , both players settled for a draw in the end game and shared the point.
Martin on board 2, playing with the black pieces had to make some unusual moves in the opening to take
K.Dalley out of the book. He then had to play some exact moves to keep in contention. After a hard fought
battle the position was level and the game was drawn.
Andy on board 3, His opening preparation proved to be too much for D.Smith, who after a long drawn out game was forced to resign. A crucial win for the team which won us the match.
George on board 4, He met his old rival D.Heelan Over the decades Mr.Heelan beat him twice with the white pieces. Again faced with the white pieces he allowed his central pawn to be taken in the Queen's gambit
opening with a view to attack the uncastled White King with his open Bishops. Dave refused to take the
pawn and after all the pieces were exchanged, with pawns left on the board in the end game, both players agreed on a draw.

Board one, Martin paired up with A.Cockburn. They eventually shook hands and shared the points.
Board two, Andy with the four pawn attack battled on, but M.Allan fended him off and the game was drawn.

near future. Thanks Steve.
Board four, Late in the game against D. Meyer,George sacrificed a pawn in the Ruy lopez defence
which led to a passed pawn. and with a 'book ending' George won the game.

Chesterfield 'B' -v- West Notts 'B'
In good spirits, the match started with the team Captains paired up on board four. John Crawley allowed his
Rook to be trapped by a Bishop which gave George the advantage and after a hard fought end game John
resigned.
Steve, on board one, with opposite coloured Bishops found too many passed pawns marching towards him and eventually he had to resign. E.William's resilience levelled the match.
On Board three, Andy chopped a pawn one square short of promotion, found himself Queen up for Knight and
Bishop. A frenzy of activity and exchanges followed and Andy's technique in the end game proved to be too
much for R.Willoughby where he was outplayed by a lone Queen and he resigned.
This left Board two, Where Martin was out played most of the game by R.Murphy who was determined to
promote one of the back to back pawns, again a square short from promotion. Martin, determined not to lose,
generated counter play at the very last minute of the game, when R.Murphy, short of time, offered a draw.
A hard fought match could have gone to either side. We're slowly beginning to feel the heat in this division.

Derby/Mick' -v- Chesterfield 'B'
Our very first loss in the league. George tasted defeat and it was a bitter pill to swallow.
We sent a reasonable side to Derby, hoping to get a point out of the match. Things were going to plan with three games drawn. Andy on board one playing against M.Thakur, felt that given another day he could have done better. Ian on board three fought hard to earn himself a half point playing against M.Allen. Brian on board four settled for a draw, playing against A.Cockburn. On board two the match was decided when well into the end game, when George's flag dropped. He reckons that S.Lamont outclassed him on board two, but he had gained experience and early seasonal jitters caused him some concern playing with the clocks.
Match result. 2.5 -v- 1.5 to Derby/Mick'.

Captain introduced a new player, Terry Hand into our team. We need a larger pool of players for the challenges that lie ahead for the coming season.
Board 3. Terry was outgraded by Roger Walker who fielded a strong side against us. Unfortunately, Terry lost his game against Roger despite a valiant effort.
George on Board 2. Well matched with J.Kelsall, the fight for the initiative went well into the end game, with a
pair of Rooks each, George won a pawn and drove it home with a 'book ending'. The match was level.
Brian on Board 4. Incredible run of ten games, four wins, six draws, finally came a cropper to R.Harrison who
out classed our stalwart in the end game.
Martin on Board 1. Gutsy performance with the Black Pieces he showed the watchful crowd why he is undefeated this season. Luke Alldred with a King side attack which did not go anywhere lost a pawn in the middle game. He fought very hard in the end game and almost achieved a draw when his flag went. Lichfield 'B' -v- Chesterfield 'B'
Well done everybody we have won the Third Division in the Derbyshire League.
Captain sent e-mail to remind Roger Holmewood the secretary Lichfield Chess Club of our re-scheduled match.
He replied by saying " We are ready to do battle".
Let the battle commence.
Brian on board four, finished first with D,Torbica after what appeared to be a tug of war between the two players which led to an early drawn game.
Ian on board three, nice to have him back, reached a favourable position in the middle game, he reached out
with his Rook, he blundered, lost it, end of game. Another lucky break for A,Fraser who is getting to be a
thorn in our side, George also blundered and lost his game to him early in the season.
Martin on board one, comfortable with the White Pieces, came through after a long tussle for the initiative
on the Queen side, which young N,Fraser won, but left his King exposed to a Queen and Rook attack and got mated. Martin levelled the match and kept his 100% record, a run of eight games.
George on Board 2, both players reached the end game and had two minor pieces with six pawns left
on the board. By this time the outcome of this match all depended on the result of this game. G,Monks
who was under a lot of pressure, he eventually lost a pawn and consequently allowed George to excite
the watchful crowd with his impressive end game display and the battle was won.
The match finished early and we had time to celebrate our achievement on the way home.

Steve finished first on board 1. Agreed a draw with S.Lamont to clinch the match for us. Despite losing
his100% score for the team, a fantastic run of five games.
George on board 2, smelling daffodils, spring came early for him, A.Cockburn fell for the 'Cambridge spring defence' he was a Knight down for a pawn after six moves. He managed to hang on to a very strong centre pawn formation but then failed to recover.
Board 3, We welcome Emma to the team she turned out for us when we needed her most and she we will certainly be picked to play for us in the near future. Mr D,Meyer with a clever King side attack won a pawn in the 'middle game' which he later failed to Queen, then with only a 'Knight' -v- 'Bishop and pawn' left on the board, in the 'end game' both players agreed a draw.
Board 4, J.Lambu went all out to attack Brian's King Indian defence with the White pieces, his Rook got trapped on the f-file which left him with material down in the end game. A gutsy performance by Brian showed us why he remains undefeated this season.

George finished first on board 2. With active Rooks and a Bishop sacrifice on the trapped King, mate to follow, left R.Hickling's 'Sicilian Grand Prix attack' in tatters.

Steve on Board 1. The game could have gone either way before the end game was reached. P,Sheldon was out classed in the end game and Steve kept his 100% record. With 3, points in the bag, the match was won!
We put our coats on hopeful that Brian on Board 4, will settle for a draw with G.J.Pace and then we could all go home early. This was not to be, the game dragged on for another hour. A double edged game between G.J.Pace passed pawn about to be promoted on the Queen side and a King side attack by Brian. Draw was agreed after Brian found a perpetual check with his Queen on G.J.Pace's White King.
