END OF SEASON REPORT 2014
Captains report
The Derbyshire 'C' team failed to stay in Division 2. In spite of one or two excellent results (notably against the eventual Division 2. Champions Belper 'B' and despite an extremely creditable 81% success rate by George Peters, all achieved on board 1.
George is clearly the winner of the captain's prize by a long way. Of those who played a significant number of games for the 'C' team, Brian Crofts and
Ian Edmundson each scored 46%. These were the four highest performances
of the nine people who played some part in our season. My thanks to George, Brian and Dave for supporting the team so well throughout the season.

END OF SEASON REPORT 2013
C team season report: At the end of last season, a win in our final match against Spondon B would have seen us promoted, it proved not to be and a draw saw us as one of the favourite teams, together with Belper C, West Nottingham B and Rolls Royce A for promotion this season. Rolls Royce A found a further ‘strong’ player and hit our strongest team 3.5 -0.5 in the first match of the season. This meant that they were always front-runners. A win in our final match at Long Eaton, however, would have seen us promoted as champions. History repeated itself, and we found that a draw was all that we could manage. In between that first match and the last match there have been lots of wonderful performances both individual and especially team ones. The team performances that stand out for me were the 4-0 win against Long Eaton at home and the 2.5-1.5 defeat of Belper C at Belper, both by the ‘regular’ squad of Ian, Brian, Dave and Pete. The second 2.5 to 1.5 defeat of Belper C and the 2-2 draw with Rolls Royce A both at the Nags Head saw the team enhanced with the addition of Chris Evans. Our bogey team this season was Derby-Mickleover D against whom we were lucky to draw the away fixture, and the home match was a tight 2.5-1.5 win. So a fantastic team performance, played 18, won 14, and drawn three (one being against champions Rolls Royce A) with a single loss to Rolls Royce A. Best individual performances were by Ian Edmundson in beating Norman Davies from Long Eaton twice, and Roger Walker from Belper C, with 6 wins out of 11 games on boards 1 and 2, and Brian Crofts in beating Wallace Bryce from Long Eaton twice and 9 wins in total out of 15 games. The captain’s prize, however, goes to Dave Dunnett with 11 wins out of 17 games. The regular squad could not have done it without help from their ‘first division reserves’, the most generous helper was Chris Evans with 6 wins out of 8, but essential contributions were also made by George Peters with 3 wins out of 5 games and Steve Bracey with 2 wins out of 3. So, congratulations and thanks to all of the team for a wonderful season-long performance, and well-deserved promotion. No-one ever knows what will happen at AGM meetings until the day, but the team are looking forward to the challenge of life in Division Two. Two teams in Division One and One in Division Two is a strong statement by the club, indicating perhaps that we are one of the strongest clubs in Derbyshire.
Mid-Season Report 2013
In selecting the strongest available teams for the first three matches of the season the captain, recovering from a serious operation and unavailable to play,
got the first match right and the second and the third matches wrong. In the first match a thorough drubbing with only Steve Bracey managing to get share of the points against runaway league leaders Rolls Royce 'A'. In the second match against Lichfield with this team George being available and not Ian, Lichfield 'B' brought a relatively weak side and were duly dispatched 4-0. The third match was against West Notts against whom last year's matches were both tight affairs, again against a relatively weak team there were good wins for Steve, Ian and Dave in a 3-1 win.
Looking at the fixtures at the start of the season it appeared that the first four fixtures were against the toughest opponents in the Division, along with Belper 'C' and and I would be happy with two or three points from these matches. It would appear that with the amalgamation of the Third and Fourth Division now the Third division teams are trying to give all their players a go and this has meant that we have not met as though opposition as last year. This showed that in the fourth match when one of the strong teams (Long Eaton) were subdued by our standard team 4-0, with particularly good wins for Ian and Brian.
Perhaps overconfident now we ventured for the second time this season to the Derby/Mickleover venue this time to play the 'D' team (one of the weaker teams). Half way through it looked like this would be a loss, with our board two already resigning, board one and three behind in material and board four absorbing a lot of pressure, Pete eventually won on board 4 and George won board 1, not for the first time, turned round a loosing game for a winning game. Phew! a lucky draw.
Sixth up were our bogey team from the last season Spondon 'C'. With Spondon loosing some players this season this was a team combined with players from the last season's 'C' and 'D' teams. With both Ian and George unavailable for selection a win for Chris Evans on his debut for the for the 'C' team and further wins from Dave and Pete we ran out of combination 3.5-0.5 winners.
So going into the mid-season break in second place a few places higher than expected we look forward to be able to enjoy our games and matches just as much next year. The most successful so far was Dave Dunnett with four wins.

Mid-Season Report 2012.
At almost the halfway point of the season, in a very competitive division, Chesterfield 'C' find themselves two points adrift with a game in hand. If they manage to win the game in hand against the team languishing at the bottom
of the bottom of the table, there will be very little between the teams between second and sixth place.
The added danger is that Chesterfield's board of difference is poor, and so we
need to perform better in the second half of the season than the first if we are hoping to avoid relegation.
Our campaign started at high flying Derby/Mickleover 'C' who, aided by our
top board not being able to make it, performed the whitewash over us.
In our second game against A.Valley/C.Cross 'B' Unexpectedly we had the honour of Hubert Mossong playing on board one for us and as we expected
we were a point ahead. the honours appeared to be even, when in the last
game to finish, our Houdini, managed to salvage a draw a queen down, to give
us the win.
Things were looking good when in our third match we held a strong
West Notts 'B' team to a draw. George who was out graded on board one
lost to young C,C.Williams, Brian Croft made up for it by winning on board three
and a fine draw by Ian on board two and I managed to hold John Crawley.
We went to Spondon 'C', captain short of players recruited Phil Ellis from
Ecclesall and Barry Williams from Aughton chess club. Despite Phil winning on
'board one' the team went down heavily to weak Spondon side.
We returned to play their very strong Spondon 'B' side, mainly due to a
wonderful performance on top board
by George Peters who managed to tame the so far unbeaten Steve Bak,
we came away with the match drawn.
Memorable moment so far, Hubert playing for the 'C' team and course his comfortable win, Brian drawing his lost position, and George with his magnificent
win. There have been a host of good fighting draws, many against higher
graded opponents, but the warning sign is that in five matches we have only managed to win four games, three of which have been on the top board.
It should be also added that what was effectively
the 'C' team had a magnificent performance in the 'plate', qualifying in
top position for the semi-finals on

End of Season Report
A good start to the second half of the season we drawn the match with
Rolls Royce 'A' games drawn on board one and four, a good win for Ian Edmundson and a loss to Phil Ellis.
Disaster struck Derby/Micklover 'C' a strong side who are seeking promotion
this season came to us and
and claimed the points. George accepted the draw on board one which he could have won and Ian battled on hard to win his game but failed.
This led the need for re-enforcement against A.Valley/C.Cross 'B' when Steve housley with a quick win led to a comfertable drawn match.
Rolls Royce 'A' at Nags Head, with top boards drawn, two good wins for Ian Edmundson and dave Dunnett. This was a good win for the team, we needed
the points.
We drew with Spondon 'C' with fine wins again by Ian Edmundson and Dave Dunnett.
We went to West Notts 'B' when the team managed to avoid offers of a dance with a comfotable 3-1 wins by George Peters and Phil Ellis on the top boards.
Spondon 'B' With the last match of the season, with the last game to finish George Peters only had to achieve a draw against the opponennt overhauld in
the reverse fixture for the team to finish third, disaster struck and george went wrong in the endgame in time trouble, the area that he is normally wery strong
in. Match drawn we finished fourth in the league and a creditable season.
We have been knocked out in the Plate Tournament by Spondon in the
semifinal on board count.
Well done everybody.

Captain's report for 2011 Season
When Chesterfield decided run a third team in the Derby and District League and I was invited to captain the
team, a survey of the club that four players were keen to play in the team (Brian, Dave, Terry and myself)
and one player try and make himself available (Ian). Things did not start out very well with a bad loss in
game one 3-1 to Amber Valley. When we lost the second game to Long Eaton, the club had written the team off as also-rans at best.
The turn-around came in the third game when due to my absence George Peters stepped in and strengthened
the team allowing the rest of the players to move down a board, giving us a win against Spondon 'B' who we all thought would be the strongest team in the Division.
At this point we did not realise that we had played the toughest three games, and when Terry sadly passed away, ostensibly it looked like we now had only three regular players, and we were next to bottom of the table.
Ian Edmundson, juggled his busy diary to be available for most of the remaining games, and George Peters was available as his replacement when Ian wasn't.
We are also grateful to Kevin, Trevor and Harry who all managed to squeeze in one game for us.
From game four the team has managed to remarkably go through the rest of the season unbeaten until
clinching promotion with a game to go in the return leg against Spondon 'B', for which, please see George's report.
All of the games were played in good spirit, and every player has finished with at least a fifty percent score.
All of the players can be proud of the achievement of this team this season.
We are looking forward to life in the third division next season in the sure knowledge that no match will be easy, and that every game will be a battle.
Hopefully we will be ready for that battle. On the behalf of the club I think everybody associated with the
team, give hearty congratulations for this season's performance and the best of luck for next season.

The team finished on a high due to a successful season. we beat Spondon 'D' who have not won a match all
season. Ian who was the last one to finish agreed a draw on board one. The rest of the team Brian,Dave, Pete all won their games. Well done everybody, and special thanks to Pete who took on the captaincy and leading the team to promotion into the third division.

Spondon 'B' -v- Chesterfield 'C'
An early draw by Dave on board three, who was well matched with J.Jenson. His attack came to a halt and both players settled for a draw.
Ian on board two defended well against D.Bramley, but could not find a way through to win the game. Rather than lose on time, he offered a draw and was accepted.
George, on board one, tried his best to break down P.Shelton's defence and the more he tried the more he drifted into a lost end game. Several times Philip asked George to accept the draw and after seeing Brian's position, he finally accepted.
The spotlight was on Brian and Bert, the crowd gathered round to watch board four. In the middle game Brian had a King side attack going on Bert's castled King and Bert tried his hardest to fend off the attack. After several exchanges of pieces Brian had a run away pawn that could not be stopped and Bert by this time was in serious time trouble so he resigned. Just when we needed him most, Brian came good!.
Well done everybody, we are looking forward to playing in the third division next season. (G.P)

Long Eaton 'B' -v- Chesterfield 'C'
In a total turn around from the earlier match in the season Chesterfield completely dominated this match.
George and Dave playing white soon had dominated positions, in spite of Dave's opponent having just toppled
Carl Gartside. With Pete having better of the game against his opponent Brian agreed a draw, virtually sealing a win for the team. George duly won, followed by Dave, and Pete followed with a win shortly afterwards. This
unexpectedly easy win sets up the promotion decider versus Spondon 'B' next week.

Lichfield 'C' -v- Chesterfield 'C'
We met at Spondon (neutral venue) to play Lichfield 'C' who turned up with two players short.
Dave and Pete stood down leaving George and Brian on boards one and two. In the middle game both players were out played and we were left wondering if we would get the half point needed to win the match.
S.Andrews who was paired up with Brian, failed to take advantage of his position and Brian got out of jail and won. George who really was tested by R.Crellin, failed to capitalise on his winning chances and the game went down to a King and pawn -v- Lone king to George. With a dozen moves left in the game, R.Crellin's flag dropped. A comment was made by Bert Loomes that we should fill in our lottery tickets this week because,
with our luck, we would probably win that too.!! (G.P)

In close fought match this excellent result puts Chesterfield 'C' in line for a crack at promotion, providing
that we can put our usual team out in the remaining games and depending upon the result of the Spondon 'B' -v- Long Eaton 'B' match played on the same night at the at the same venue as our next match.
Brian was the the first one to finish with another win in a recent good run. He always seemed to be in control.
Pete was next to finish when his opponent resigned when about to go a bishop and two pawns down, one
of them a passed pawn. Dave finished shortly afterwards sealing the win. Ian looked set to draw his game
approaching the final time control, when an excellent move from his opponent won material and Ian resigned.
Match result: Chesterfield 3-1.
A Valley/C Cross 'B' -v- Chesterfield 'C'
In a match where we were weakened by players thinking that Valentine's day was more important than
chess, the remaining players lifted their game to draw against the runaway league leaders, almost pinching
both points. First to finish was Brian achieving a blocked position and draw against a player over thirty
points higher than him. Next to finish was the captain first of all winning a pawn then a bishop to mate his
opponent on the 69th move. Harry was hanging on in his game, a pawn down, but eventually achieving
a theoretically drawn endgame, and having a bare king when his opponent flag fell. The last game to finish
was Dave's exciting battle, when first Dave then his opponent offers draws bore Dave went wrong in a won
endgame for the match to finish all square.
Match result: Chesterfield 'C' 2-2.

In the return match although Ian was well in control against his opponent, each of the other boards was
making heavy weather against their opponents although all were slightly higher graded. Ian duly won and
the match on board four ended in an opposite bishops ending when the position was repeated for the third
time on move fifty six.
In typical King's Indian fashion Brian found a winning sacrifice when behind on the board, quite brilliancy!.
This allowed Kevin to agree a draw as the match already clinched.
Well done everybody!.

In this match postponed due to the snow in early December.
Brian and Pete arrived on time, but Ian and Dave found difficulty in locating the venue. With their adrenalin
still pumping Ian quickly finished off his opponent, and Dave's opponent had his King stuck in the centre with
all of Dave's pieces pointing at it. Well played both of you!
With the captain playing the black side of a Benko Gambit Declined, his opponent initiated the exchange of
all the minor pieces and seven pawns apiece, when he offered a draw. With Ian already having won and
Dave's win eminent and Brian's game still at hand-to-hand fighting mode, the captain decided he would take
a draw to give the team to win, when he was relishing a good endgame battle.
Brian eventually went wrong when trying to win.
The return match is on Monday at the Three Merry Lads.
Match result: Chesterfield 2.5 - 1.5.

still pumping Ian quickly finished off his opponent, and Dave's opponent had his King stuck in the centre with
all of Dave's pieces pointing at it.
Chesterfield 'C' -v- Spondon 'D'
A winning start to the new year with a quick win on the bottom board for Trevor Webster who after finding 13. Qxf7+ went on to checkmate his opponent in 23 moves.
Dave Dunnett on board three always in control, first one pawn and then two pawns up, his opponent resigned
when he was about to force one of the pawns to queen.
Brian had a tough game on board two when Louise Brace found some good middle game tactics to establish
a better position. Brian offered a draw by repetition which Louise accepted. With the match already won, Ian
Edmundson accepted his opponents draw offer even though he was a strong pawn up and ahead on time.
A good 3-1 win even though the opponents were bottom of the division, they fought bravely and the win was welcome in the end. (P.W)

Chesterfield 'C' -v- Spondon 'B'
Our first win in the Fourth Division!
At what cost? Captain Pete Willoughby is poorly and missed the match. Get well soon Pete!.
George stepped in on board one, with a fine win over P.Shelton. The game was level right up to the end game where he got his Bishop trapped and eventually lost his game.
Ian on board two, a hard earned half point. The game went right down to the endgame King -v- King and
pawn. Ian felt that he missed a win some where in the game.
Board three. Another tough draw. Brian was well matched with G.Pace, a tug of war took place between the players which lasted well into the end game and then they shook hands for a draw.
Board four. There was a lot of talk about this game after the match, Terry displayed some clever tactics
but he could not convert his advantage against Bert Loomes who also raised his game to earn a half point.
Match result 2.5 -v- 1.5 to Chesterfield.

Chesterfield 'C' -v- Long Eaton 'B'
If there was one game where it became obvious that this season Division 4 is not going to be an easy one,
this was it.
Dave Dunnett was the first one to finish, when he blundered whilst ahead. Next to finish was Terry with a
nice controlled win, always ahead where he wanted to be. Brian blundered the exchange in a close game.
It was nice to see Ian was available to play for the team, but he was just unable to convert the advantage
of Rook and three pawns versus Rook and two pawns, and a draw was agreed to finish the match.
The run of three home matches comes to an end on Monday when the favourites for promotion
Spondon 'B' are the visitors.

Chesterfield 'C' -v- A Valley/C Cross 'B'
When wee saw the team sheet for the newly merged Amber Valley/C Cross 'B', we knew the match was
going to be tough.
Approaching the time control the games on board 1,2 and 4 were pretty even with Brian and Peter even
having slight positional advantages. Things were looking better on board three were Dave had invested
a pawn in achieving a strong bishop pair which was starting to cut its way into the opposition position.
Having made a strategic error just before the time control the captain found that his opponent
capitalised mercilessly on the error and Pete soon found himself in trouble, and a tactical error ensured
his resignation a dozen or so moves after the time control.
Dave duly converted the win on board three, a good well rounded performance, always being in control
of the game.
As the two top boards approached the end of the final time control, the optimist saw Brain ahead in
position and time and were and looking for a win, whilst Terry, equal in position but behind on the clock
looked set to hold on for a draw.
The end saw Terry blunder just before his flag fell, and Brian flag fall in an unclear position.
So ended our fist outing in many years as a 'C' team, a sound loss but each of the games could have
gone either way, giving hope for the future.
Our next game is again at home next week when we do battle against Long Eaton 'B'.
One of our roles of the 'C' team is to ensure that all the club members that are ready for competitive chess
have the chance to play for us, so if you haven't been approached by the captain yet and want to be
considered for a game, please speak to him or a another member giving your contact details.
