Att: Martin H (chair), Hubert, Steve Bracey, Kevin F, Amar, Martin P, Peter, George P, Dave A, David M, Brian, George G, Richard, Stefan, Dave L (minutes).
Apol: Andy, Tim, Ben, John, Kevin G (holidays); Steve Burke (car repairs) Mike (ill health). Minutes 2023 were accepted. No matters arising. Treasurer's report: George regretted that, owing to his own and Mrs Peters' ill health, plus temporary loss of driving licence arising from that, he hadn't been able to be around much. The finances, which he is handing on to Steve Bracey, remain sound at over £500 in credit, and we thanked George for his many years of service and wished him and Mrs Peters all the best for the future. Captains' reports: Sheffield League A team: Joint first on match points with SASCA and Nomads, SASCA winning on results between the teams. Standouts Martin P +5=4-0 TPR 2256! Peter 8.5/13 on board 1, Joe 8.5/12 Summer League: Won by one match point: Martin P 4/5, Dave L 2.5/3, Joe 5/7. Richardson Cup: eliminated on board count in second round 3-3 v SASCA B Team: Runners up in div 3, 15 players, won 9 lost 3. Tim 8, Dave A 8,5/12, Joe probably the MVP with +5=4-1 on board 1. Promoted to division 2! C team: Came an honourable 4th and will take promotion on the off chance it's offered: Ben 6/7, Stefan 6.5/8, Amar 7/9. Highlights were a win at SASCA, 5-1 v Nomads and two 5-0 scores. Derbyshire League A team: Won the league thanks to Derby drawing the last two v Breadsall. Martin H 9.5/12, Dave L 8/12, Martin P 8.5/13. Only 4 of our 56 games were lost. A brave show by a lower graded team saw us go out 1.5-2.5 in the cup semi . B team: George G congratulated his team on a "fantastic season" which culminated in promotion. Standout: Kevin G 3.5/4, all with Black. Next Season: We will run three teams in Sheffield, two in the Richardson Cup; two teams in Derbyshire. Election of officers and captains: all as before, except for Steve Bracey taking over as Treasurer. Our thanks to George included recognition that he has now been a member for 50 years, a record equalling Victor Robinson (1924 to 74) and surpassed only by the 60 years of Joe Hooton, George's next target. Schools Tournament: Martin H, George G and Brian reported that this event, played on 19 04 24, had been a great success and we, and the schools, hoped to repeat it. When that happens, Richard and John stand ready to help too. Netherthorpe won ahead of Outward Academy, Brookfield and St Mary's. 3 rounds over 6 boards, the star result being 3/3 for our own Kevin Guo. We have a trophy (the 1950-85 Schools Trophy) to present. Club Trophies: Several of these were shown at the meeting, Martin H having received them from the family of our late and much missed President Mike Johnson. We decided to go with Peter's suggestion that the club championship trophy go to the player who furthest exceeded their grading in the season. Rapid Play Tournament: Fixed for 26 09 24, when we hope to see our President Andy Mort. Landlady has agreed we can play this downstairs. Annual Subscription: The Annual Subscription will stay at £10, free for juniors. At this point George Gledhill thanked the club for having been welcoming, and said he'd recognise this by paying next year's subscription for everybody. Our deepest appreciation and gratitude to George for this generosity.

Att: Martin H (chair), Dave L (mins), George P (treasurer), Amar, Steve Bracey, David A. Peter, John, Ben, Martin P, David M, Chris, Kevin, Richard, Gary, Mike A. Apologies from Andy, Brian, Hubert, Tim, Ken and Stephan.
Minutes of last year's meeting were summarised. Arising: None. Treasurer's report: We transferred from HSBC to Natwest and saved money by doing so owing to their free banking. Around 20 members represents a recovery from the pandemic and a foundation for the future. We have over £500 in the bank and slightly more than last year. We're good for equipment: just need another 1000 scoresheets. Martin and Peter will sort that. Captain's reports: Sheffield A (Martin H) won the last four after a slow start and came third; given the strength of Nomads especially, this was about as good as could be hoped. Dave Ashcroft 6.5/9, Mike Smith 4/6 including a win over Sam Milson (2174); Tim 6/10. Derby and District was won +9 = 3 - 0; Hubert 4.5/5, Peter over 50%; best win was 3.5-0.5 v Breadsall. Summer League: also won. 9 players appeared, with the memorable moment being an amazing miniature by Peter v our old friend Daniel Sullivan. In total, we played 34 matches and lost only 4, 3 of those to Nomads, who field all manner of 2300 and 2200+ players. Best performance in Derbyshire was probably Martin P's 8.5/10 - for Rolls Royce! B team: Brian's policy was to use as many players as possible. 13 people got us to 4th out of 8, a plus record. George 10/14. Summer League was a big ask for our team, playing a division above the ideal. Standouts were two drawn matches v SASCA, wins by Tim v Miles Edwards-Wright (2045); George v Tom Wills (2074) and Kevin v another old buddy, Steve Gibbs (1752). Amar and George both made 3/5. C Team: Richard describes a slow start, lots of new players, and a fine run-in to finish second. An amazing season to give confidence for the future. We won't look for promotion because B team would be in the same division. Next Year: we will again put in 3 teams in Sheffield; one in the Richardson; 1 in the Derby & District and - revival - a second D&D team Officers: Andy Mort as President. Secretary Dave Latham. Treasurer: George Peters. Martin Howard will captain in Sheffield (A and Richardson); Brian Crofts (B); Richard Dawson (C) and we congratulated him on a really splendid job. D&D teams: A team Martin Howard, B team George Lovell. Webmaster : Ben with an offer of help from David M. Rapid Play Tournament: we aim for 21 09 23, internal event. Annual Subscription: unchanged at £10, free for juniors and life members. Note that people playing for our teams need ECF membership after 3 appearances; silver is free for under 18s in their first year, £6 in the second year if still under 18. Centenary: A letter to the Derbyshire Times in Sept 1924 jump started our club. We should at least raise publicity for Sept 2024; Martin H urged us to look at the example of Brent, who have a thriving inter-schools competition; several local schools do have chess clubs. John said there was plenty going on in Dronfield and lots of enthusiasm on line. We should keep an eye on the government offer of funding for chess. Note, however, that people hoping to work with schools have a lot of legal hoops to go through. We hope also to run a MIKE JOHNSON memorial tournament. Sheffield AGM: unfortunately, Martin H and Dave L can't attend. We decided as a club to support, nem con, the proposals to introduce increments - "the way chess is going" (Peter). Meeting closed 20 45. Attending: Martin (chair); Dave L (minutes); George (treasurer). Peter, Dave A, John, Brian, Mike, Steve Bracey, Steve Burke, Richard, Luke, Kevin, Gary.
Apol: Hubert, Tim, Amar, Ben, Andy, Ian and Daniel. All should be back except Daniel - our thanks to him - who will be out this season because of commitments to medicine. A minute's silence was held in memory of Mike Johnson, President, long standing club member, beloved friend. Martin spoke of the high regard in which Mike was held, evidenced by obituaries on websites for Sheffield, Yorkshire and Derbyshire as well as our own site. Minutes of the incomplete 2019/20 season were not read, nor were matters arising taken, as the passage of time had rendered them irrelevant. Treasurer's report was read. Nearly £500 in the bank, but we decided to look at switching from Lloyds to NatWest to avoid a monthly charge and transaction fees. Only purchase required was 8 clocks, but 6 of these have been stored for safekeeping, so 2 needed. Report on Summer League: A team a pleasing second (+5 =3 -2) behind SASCA. Star performance: Mike S +4=1. B team also second, 2 points behind the winners, but 5 ahead of 3rd place. Ten players got a game, Amar the top performer with 5/6, and well done to everybody: Tim 5.5/10, Steve 3/5, Kevin 4.5/7, Luke 2,5/5, Brian 4/9. Future participation: three teams in Sheffield, one in the Richardson cup; one team in the Derby & District. Election of Officers: Andy Mort has agreed to be our President, and we have every hope that his recovery will see him back among us. George - treasurer; Dave L secretary; Team captains: A team and Derby - Martin; B team Brian; C team - Richard. Dave will be webmaster as part of the secretary role and will act on a suggestion to move the photo of the club ca. 1951 from the front page in favour of something a little more contemporary. We decided against an equipment officer. Sheffield proposals: we have three votes - one as a club, one each for Mike and Dave L as vice-presidents. Mike and Dave will vote as they see right, but we decided that as a club we will vote to keep the top division at 8 boards, and in favour of the proposal to introduce incremental timing at 60 minutes for the game plus 10 seconds per move. Rapid Play tournament: we hope Tim will organise one for September 22nd, much thanks. Annual subscription will stay at £10, free for juniors. A.O.B: Mike raised the need for a back up plan should the national economic situation lose us the Red Lion venue. The Pig and Pump or other pubs were possible options, but we cannot count on them not being in the same predicament. Should a move be forced upon us, Luke offered to help with transport, much appreciated. Minutes of the Annual General Meeting of Chesterfield Chess Club, Thursday 6th September 2018 at The Red Lion, 54a Church St., Brimington. 7.30pm
Att: Alan Hobson, Harry Schofield, Martin Howard, Peter Ackley, Steve Burke, Steve Housley, George Peters, Ian Edmundson, Mike Johnson (President, chair), Dave Latham (secretary, minutes). 1. Apologies for absence: Andy Mort, Mike Smith, Tim Humphries, Dave Ashcroft, Daniel Sullivan, Brian Crofts, Steve Bracey. 2. Minutes of the 2017 Annual General Meeting were read and approved, once corrected: Ian was present; the place was the White Swan. 3. Matters arising: Query: what goof lost us the Derby & District? Answer: in the vital match all four agreed draws thinking someone else was winning! Outstanding: new Hooton Trophy. Agreed £50 + engraving, from a shop/Ebay 4. Treasurer's Report: George reported (healthy) balance of £479.83; income £227.50, expenditure £349.25, but the gap was more than accounted for by our buying 5 new clocks. Alan commended George’s clear record, which was accepted subject to audit. We decided to buy another 3 clocks. Peter will meet Andrew Butterworth to sort that. 5. Secretaries' and Captains’ Reports: Secretary: Dave reported an incident free year. Notable events: Sheffield has “rejoined the ECF” in the sense that we will be using their LMS (“league management system”) in place of Chessnuts, and will need to get used to it. Most of our members are in the ECF already, but if not, the club gets a bill if a non-ECF player plays four times for us. The Sheffield AGM resulted in us keeping 8 players in first division teams, and reducing to four for the C team, in the fourth division. Andy Mort’s proposal to try to avoid Richardson Cup Final replays by using board count/ bottom board elimination had been accepted, but not the plan to base eligibility on 5 games in league or cup. We felt he’d done the right thing, and the proposal would have made things better for our opponents rather than ourselves, but 13 votes to 8 hadn’t been enough to carry the day. Sheffield A: Martin reported a good season. +9 =3 -2 had made a good second to Ecclesall, and we were within a whisker of beating them twice, which would have swung it. Standout performances Steve Housley (+8 =3 -1) Mike J, Peter, and Mike Alcock, who wasn’t keen to play but scored +3=2-1. Richardson: beat Barnsley (5-1); Woodseats (4-2); University (4-2); and after a 3-3 draw in the final SASCA had to default the replay, on an imposed date after various to-ings and fro-ings Sheffield B is on the website and C – reading the results we came third. Good scores from Amar, Brian and John; Alan scored +4=3-1, and Harry =1. Derby & District: Won by Breadsall, miles ahead on 25 points. Thanks to all who turned out for us. Both teams got 15 points, well up there in an “extremely close” group: so bunched that Lichfield went down with 12. B team ahead of A on goal difference. We lost 1.5-2.5 to eventual winners Breadsall, and there was the usual evening Jamboree, which was good fun and won by us. Stellar 4/4 by Ken. 6. Election of Officers, Auditors & Match Captains: President: Mike Johnson (prop Peter, sec Ian/Martin). General thanks to Mike for his hard (and successful) work at a difficult time. Secretary: Dave Latham Treasurer: George Peters, who wishes to stand down if/when a replacement can be found. Team Captains: Sheffield A & Richardson – Martin Howard. B – Brian Crofts. C – choice deferred: the people one of whom we hope will take the job were not present. Derby & District: A – Mike Johnson. B – Andy Mort. Internal Competition(s) – Peter Ackley. Webmaster – George Peters. Auditor – David Ashcroft (we hope; not present). 7. Question of venue. Those present spoke of the good playing conditions at The Red Lion; the apparent stability of the place, which appears to be thriving; the decent beer; the free parking (though we need to advise people, especially other clubs, where easy parking is); the warmth of the welcome, and the landlady’s hope that we’d not set up and then leave at once as another games team had done. Hence those present thought we should give the place at least a year as the honourable thing to do when the Red Lion people had offered us a good place for free. We regretted that this was not the universal view, but we have never moved venue before without displeasing anyone. We thanked Mike Johnson and Andy Mort for the trekking round the town they had done before The Red Lion was found. 8. Fixing of fees and subscriptions, including response to adoption of ECF LMS system: Fee of £10, free for juniors, no change. If you’re playing in our teams, it will be the Captain’s job to pick only ECF members after three games. Bronze membership being £16, if a player is unwaged or otherwise not easily able to part with £16, we will put £8 of their £10 sub towards the cost. We will also establish an “ECF support fund” to put towards ECF memberships for people who otherwise can’t afford it, and Mike Johnson will contact Mike Smith with our grateful acceptance of an anonymous donor’s offer of a donation. 9. Proposed amendments to the Constitution & Rules: none 10. Team and individual Competitions: we will enter 3 teams in Sheffield (divs 1, 2 and 4); 1 in the Richardson Cup; 2 in Derby & District. We plan a Club Championship, which Peter will run as a Swiss, one game per month. 11. Any Other Business GDPR: we accepted, with much appreciation to him and his clubmates, Steve Burke’s offer to share work done by the Ashfield club which should make them, and so potentially us, compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation. We would like to thank James Lindebaum for his contribution to the club; congratulations on winning a place at Oxford University and we wish him well for his time there. There having been confusion as to the date of the meeting, minutes for the previous meeting were not available.
Treasurer's report. George reported income of £114 50, outgoings of £212 (mostly on new clocks). This left a healthy balance and meant the state of the finances was sound. Secretary's report had it that chess-wise we had been very successful, winning two trophies; to have won the Derbyshire League with a team representing half the club was a memorable achievement; the Summer League had also been retained, again by a team for which half the club's strongest could not play. The concern remained not the strength of the chess, but the numbers playing it... Sheffield AGM. Dave recounted the various dealings between the YCA and the ECF; compared what we got out of playing in Derbyshire (where we have to be ECF members) with what we get out of playing in Sheffield. The meeting decided, among other things in the interest of those in Sheffield to whom £12 is a significant sum, not to support attempts to make the Sheffield League an ECF members' league. Club officers: assuming the consent of those not present, and of course we will change tack if they are not prepared to carry on - Mike Johnson as President; Dave Latham as Secretary; George Peters as Treasurer; Captains in Sheffield - Martin Howard, Brian Crofts, Ian Edmundson; in Derbyshire, Dave Latham and AN Other. Andy Mort has since indiocated his willingness to take on that role. We will enter two teams in the Sheffield League; two in the Richardson and three in Derbyshire. Fees and subscriptions: £6 club fee; club championship to be free. Present: Mike Johnson (chair), Martin Howard, Mike Smith, Dave Dunnett, Pete Willoughby, Steve Bracey, Brian Crofts, Steve Housley, Ian Edmundson , Dave Latham (minutes). Apologies: Kevin Fairburn, Trevor Webster, Andy Mort, George Peters, Harry Schofield.
Minutes of 2009/10 were agreed as an accurate record; no matters arising. Treasurer's report: Brian handed out accounts as prepared by George; thanks to George; healthy surplus, equipment looked good buys; no financial problems. Secretary's report: smooth, success on chess front; no admin problems; flagged up ECF's financial difficulties and likely need for a response to their proposals for solving these. Captain's reports: Sheffield A a strong second; some very fine individual results; second +11 = 1 -4; would have sneaked the league but for two 3.5-4.5 losses to Worksop, who also foiled us in the Cup. The Summer |League was won! and with it the historic New Woodhouse Cup. Sheffield B fought the good fight in a "very tight" division; with 3 matches to go promotion or relegation were still possible; neither happened; very competitive, good times. So too in the Summer League, solid performance. Derbyshire A retained the league title by a wider margin than looked likely after two points from three matches; we then won all the rest. Consistent turnout by our strongest the secret weapon, though vital points were scored by folk who stood in. Cup Final too. Can't be bad. Derbyshire B were promoted; their second place behind an excellent Long Eaton team was a fine achievement. Derbyshire C looked like struggling after three matches, but were unbeaten in the rest to win promotion. Superb by Pete and his men; Pete's view that he should resign in the interests of strengthening the side was greeted with the appropriate horror and he'll be staying on. Competition Secretary. Mike Alcock and Dave Latham will share the Championship. Much appreciation for Pete's successful revival of this tournament. Pete plans a second Swiss, 6 rounds this time. The meeting was keen for him to approach GM Stewart Haslinger to see if he would be interested in a simul / lecture. Derbyshire AGM: Mon 15th. Steve B and Brian will go and Dave will give them the info needed for our main objective - getting matches swapped from Monday to Tuesday wherever possible. We have a draft fixture list and, now A & B are in top division, coordinating with Sheffield looks difficult. Sheffield AGM: was held, minutes coming. Standout items: we'll be in divs 1 + 3 (out of 5). Peter Hulse will be taking on the Sheffield website and is keen for all to get creative, expand it from the blog model. The Sheffield Congress was a big success and should return; why not see now if your family will allow you to help make this our big end of season event, where we show the world what we learned in the year? Trophies: were shown off, starring a final appearance (for now?) of the Sheffield and Derbyshire League trophies in the same room. Also the Summer League trophy. Our own trophies: the Championship trophy's chez Mike Alcock; possibly the best game trophy too, though Mike Johnson said he might have that. We have the old trophy for the Championship Major, also one captain's prize (the queen). Election of Officers: President: Mike Johnson. Secretary: Dave Latham. Treasurer: George Peters. Auditor: Brian Crofts. Competition Secretary: Pete Willoughby. Sheffield A: Martin Howard. B: Steve Bracey. Derby + District A: Dave Latham. B: George Peters. C: Pete Willoughby. Summer League A: Dave Latham. B: Brian Crofts. Competitions: Two teams in Sheffield, one in the Richardson, not entering the Plate. Three in Derbyshire; one in the Cup, one in the Plate based on the C Team. No ideal solution to the dilemmas of having A + B in the same division. Thanks to all who expressed tolerance of whatever we decide, which is a split of strength, chief ambition both stay up. Team A: Dave Latham, Mike Johnson, Steve Bracey, Brian Crofts; Steve Housley (board 3 or above) when available. Team B: Mike Alcock, Andy Mort, Martin Howard, Mike Smith, George Peters; Hubert Mossong (board 1) when available. Martin and Andy, having near identical ECF grades, will share the higher board. All other club members will be needed, hopefully for board 4 only (unless we get a strong recruit) so as to remain available for the C Team, and will go with whichever team needs them first. AOB: the ECF's letter was considered; seemed to propose a levy of £13 for people who play in leagues, £19 for those who play in congresses also. Need to consider what we get for this and whether other fees (e.g. D+D, currently £107) will come down if the new scheme gets going. Entirely possible it won't happen and if it does it's not this year. Present: Steve Bracey, Brian Crofts, Andy Mort, George Peters, Mike Johnson, Dave Latham (minutes); Steve Burke was visiting and also sat through it.
Some apologies were received, and thanks for them, but with the AGM being on the bank holiday no apology needed: it was felt unreasonable to expect people to turn out. On the other hand, the AGM had to be early because some decisions had to be taken before the Sheffield and Derbyshire AGMs next week. Since it may be that someone really wanted to be here and couldn't be, because of the date of the meeting, we agreed to give them time as soon as feasible to discuss any point they would have wished to raise. Matters arising from previous minutes: A proposal by Andy Mort was unanimously carried that we owe a debt of gratitude to David Bentley for his creation of the website. Andy thanked Dave L too for helping make it "the website of the year", and Dave accepted the plaudit while saying that, in his opinion, on the writing side Nomads still set the standard in this department as in most others. There's a good one by Barnsley too, and like Nomads they have a games feature, which Dave hopes to emulate with the help, again, of David Bentley. Dave will give George and Steve the codes so they can add stuff, in the History (GP) and B Team (SB) areas especially. George put it that the last meeting had been too rushed; Dave had it that we didn't want meetings getting in the way of the chess and discouraging guests and new members. Issue unresolved. George said that the change of venue had been a success and an escape from potential disaster, thanks for those responsible for trying out the various alternatives. Mike J did the leg work round town, while Steve B and Dave L had had a swift half at the Three Merry Lads, a hard job and a vital contribution to chess. Treasurer's Report: George listed our assets, which were felt by most present to represent a very sound financial position. Last year we got £100 in, and spent £41 on league fees. A short debate on whether to buy more equipment decided we needn't. George will see if his woodwork skills extend to increasing the size of the box to take all the boards etc easily. If not, the meeting authorised £100 for a bigger box, it being stressed we need something landlords will be prepared to have live at their pubs. Secretary's report: mostly covered by a read of the website. We won everything going in Derbyshire, and had it tougher in Sheffield. This was probably a fair reflection of our strength: a step behind Nomads and the University when they're on song; generally, punching our weight. Dave said that he had no concerns for the quality of chess we play, more about the numbers playing it. Let's think about encouraging more new members and getting publicity. To this end, he asked people to think about the old May Day tournaments at The Winding Wheel, can we revive? Sheffield AGM: we discussed the proposals and mandated Dave to vote a) in favour of the Junior chess organiser position; b) to keep the Davy at 8 boards. No strong opinion on the others. Andy hopes to make the fixtures meeting. Derbyshire AGM: we decided we would put a B team in. Dave will attend the Derbyshire AGM/Fixtures meet (in the event, Mike Alcock was able to do this, thanks) and pass on the fixtures for what will probably be heavy horse trading at the Sheffield fixtures. Trophies: We located most. We will change the Saunderson back to its original role (pointed out by Brian) as the B Team captain's prize. A team prize will be the small queen. We invite offerings as best games for the last few seasons, to catch up on that trophy, currently in the possession of Mike Alcock. Club Officers: President, Mike Johnson. Secretary, Dave Latham. Treasurer, George Peters. Auditor, we hope for the thoughts of Terry Hand. For the teams: changes. Sheffield A Team: ANDY MORT. B Team: STEVE BRACEY. Derbyshire A team: DAVE LATHAM. B Team: GEORGE PETERS. Various expressions of thanks and relief were made: not only to those who took on the jobs, but to David Bentley who had offered to step in if we really were desperate, and to Brian Crofts, who said maybe next year once he's seen Steve Bracey in action. Fees and Subscriptions: George said he'd try to ensure all paid and called on them to do so. We ended the free membership for pensioners as some of them are well off baby boomers; won't push anyone who actually is starving in a garret. Competitions: same as last year except for the new team in Derbyshire. Internal competition, notably the club championship, hasn't happened much in recent years. This has much to do with the number of league matches. Other ideas were floated as to how to get a name on the championship trophy: award for performance against other clubs? Or to the highest placed Chesterfield player in an open competition, e.g. at The Winding Wheel? Or to the winner of an internal one dayer? Or to the winner of a May-September internal competition to keep things going over Summer? No decision. Present: George Peters, Mike Alcock, Andy Mort, David Bentley, Mike Johnson, Dave Dunnett, Steve Housley, David Andrews, Trevor Webster, Terry Hand, Steve Bracey, Carlos Ferrinho, Dave Latham (mins).
Minutes of previous meeting (Sept 07) taken as read. WELCOME BACK: Mike Alcock, who'd missed last season through illness. VENUE: Steve B and Dave L described recent events. Dave had been to The Spital on a recent Monday to find the place closed and the landlady locked out. At that stage, she had said that the pub was closing indefinitely, and that there would be a chance to pick up our belongings the next day. Dave and Steve had duly salvaged enough sets, clocks etc to keep us functioning, which were now in our trunk. Our cupboard, containing other things, was still inside The Spital. It now transpired that The Spital had reopened, at least temporarily, under new management. Mike Johnson, Steve and Dave had scoured Chesterfield for a new venue and this search had resulted in the offer of a free venue at The Three Merry Lads. Its obvious downside was that it is out of town; plusses, that it's free and in various ways an agreeable place: quiet, easy for parking, good beer, no obvious drug trade. It was agreed, nem con, to give the Three Merry Lads a trial, until May 09 at least. It was suggested that as folk wander round Chesterfield they give thought to possible future venues and ask prices, etc; but the experience of finding a free venue suggested that our bargaining position was stronger than we had supposed and, qv Nomads, it seems feasible to expect a free venue if we buy beer, a sacrifice which Steve B indicated he at least was prepared to make. CLUB OFFICERS: were eventually appointed on the usual principle of selection of those prepared to do it, with anyone who wants to take on these jobs being very welcome. There was a dispute as to how far the captains' discretion should extend in deciding board order. We ended with Dave L taking on A team captain for Sheffield and Derbyshire, his intention being that the higher grading entitles a player to claim the higher board without forcing him/her to take it. Steve B remains B team captain; George treasurer; Dave secretary and Mike J club president. OFFICERS REPORTS: Andy described a successful season, especially given that illness and absences had made it no easy matter to get out our strongest sides. We had won the Richardson Cup; put up a strong showing in Sheffield including a close challenge to the immensely strong champions from Nomads. We'd played a valuable part in winning the Woodhouse Cup, and finished a good second to Breadsall in Derbyshire. Steve B recounted leading the B side to promotion and so laying hands on Sheffield's largest trophy. He regretted we'd probably lost some of the team, but thought we'd do fine in the third division. George ran through the finances and reported we still have a solid amount in the bank for future emergencies. We then voted to reduce subs to £10/£5 children/ free to pensioners, which the treasurer thought a mistake. COMPETITIONS: We decided to stick with the same tournaments as last season, to wit, two teams in the Sheffield League; one in the Derby & District; one in the Richardson Cup; one internal competition to be organised by Mike Johnson. CLUB SEASON: At Steve B's suggestion we decided to close the club for next Summer; recent Summers hadn't been a success, and if prospective members turn up it might be better for them to hear "try September" and find us at our best, than be left with the impression that there's very little going on. We decided to hold a second meeting in May before closing for the Summer. WEBSITE: Dave L said that he still hoped to start a website, but there had been some technical difficulties. At this, David Bentley said (and later proved) that he'd get one sorted out witin 24 hours; he invited interested parties to contribute to it once it was up and running. |
